GALS, Inc., a non-profit agency, is aware of many issues facing individuals and agencies as they work towards greater independence and greater quality of life.  We are aware of this due to the numerous years of experience working in the field of human services.

To help the individuals served achieve independence by offering protective services and supports.  Assisting these individuals in having a more rewarding future and to work toward greater self-sufficiency.

GALS, Inc was established in September of 2002 and we serve approximately 400 individuals in central Nebraska and the surrounding areas.  We are a  support agency that provides assistance to recipients of government benefits (Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Social Security Disability Income, State Assistance, Veteran’s benefits, etc.) who are unable to independently manage their finances due to disabilities such as mental illness, developmental disabilities, physical limitations, substance abuse, etc.

We are an insured agency whose case records for individuals served are reviewed by agencies such as the Social Security Administration, Veteran’s Administration, and the court systems.  We are accountable for each individuals funds, to make sure that individual needs are met and documentation is present to support that.

There is a monthly charge for the services that are provided.  The payee services fee is based upon the fee allowed by the Social Security Administration for an organizational payee service.  If it has been determined that a drug/alcohol condition is a contributing factor, the fee may be higher.  Resource limitations can be taken into consideration for individuals on a case by case basis. 

Fees for other services provided (guardianship, conservatorship, consultation, audits, etc.) will be determined at the time services is requested. 

 GALS, Inc will develop a personal budget based upon the information regarding income and expenses that is provided to us.  We ensure that individuals have adequate food, shelter, medical care and personal needs.  Once a budget has been developed, each individual will receive funds as determined in the budget.   


It is a requirement that GALS be able to verify all expenditures made.  GALS requires that all individuals served provide verification of receipt of funds.  This verification can be mailed to our office, faxed, or text.  THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS REQUIREMENT

 The staff at GALS, Inc have many years of experience.  They come from varying backgrounds that bring expertise in differing areas including: Developmental Disabilities, Geriatrics, Mental Health, and Housing just to name a few. 



Our Services

Representative Payee

A representative payee is an individual or organization appointed by SSA to receive Social Security and/or SSI benefits for someone who cannot manage or direct someone else to manage his or her money. The main responsibilities of a payee are to use the benefits to pay for the current and foreseeable needs of the beneficiary and properly save any benefits not needed to meet current needs. A payee must also keep records of expenses. When SSA requests a report, a payee must provide an accounting to SSA of how benefits were used or saved. 

It is a requirement that GALS be able to verify all expenditures made.  GALS requires that all individuals served provide a copy of your lease/rental agreement and verification of receipt of funds.  This verification can be mailed to our office, faxed, or text.  THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS REQUIREMENT  

Fiduciary

Any individual appointed as a VA fiduciary is responsible for managing the beneficiary‘s VA income and ensuring the beneficiary‘s just debts are paid. Additional, responsibilities of the fiduciary include, but are not limited to the following: Utilizing the funds for the daily needs, Reporting changes to the Fiduciary Activity, Keeping accurate, complete records and receipts, etc. 

Conservatorship

AT THIS TIME DUE TO STAFFING ISSUES WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING NEW CONSERVATORSHIP CASES

Person(s) appointed to make financial decisions for the protected person. The conservator typically has the power to enter into contracts, pay bills, invest assets, and perform other financial functions for the protected person.

ACCOUNT INFORMATION

 

  • How do I reach my case manager?
    • This can be found on the Directory page.
  • When can I expect to receive money?
    • Funds that are mailed can be expected to arrive each week on Friday.  If individuals receive funds via the debit card system, those funds are available by 3 pm on Wednesday.
  • How do I review my budget?
    • You can contact your case manager via email or phone to discuss your budget.  If you’d like to make changes, it is best to discuss and request changes by the 25th of the month so the change can go into effect the following month.
  • How do I request additional funds?
    • You can contact your case manager via email or phone to make requests.  Requests for additional funds are to be made by noon on Friday to be process for the following week.  Please limit your requests to no more than 2 requests per month.  Your request may be granted IF you have funds available above and beyond your budgeted needs AND YOU HAVE PROVIDED RECEIPTS FOR PREVIOUS REQUESTS.
  • When do I need to provide receipts?
    • Receipts need to be provided to the case manager for all funds received.    Receipts need to be received in our office prior to another request being made.  Receipts can be be mailed, faxed, or emailed (simply take a picture with your phone and email it to you case worker!!)

OVER RESOURCES

 

  • How much money can I have without being over the resource limit?
    • Medicaid, DAC, and SSI recipients can have no more than a total of $2000 in all accounts
  • How long do I have to spend a back payment from Social Security without being considered over resource?
    • The back pay funds will not be counted as a resource for 9 months.
